A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was made public, raising questions about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the event.

Market Movement in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the month's conclusion rose in the time leading up to former President Trump stated on Saturday that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which registered on the site last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that traders assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

However these probabilities had increased to 11% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a sharp shift in positions right before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," stated Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other individuals also made large payouts from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Grows

Elected officials are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week aims to prohibit government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the United States, with participants able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting arena.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
