The movie, however, could coincide so closely with the carefully constructed image circulated by official channels that, within Russia, it functions as a endorsement instead of a challenge.

The Crafted Superhero

For years, the Kremlin and its entertainment industry have worked together to forge a tailor-made version of Putin. This character is an infallible strategist without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a local 007 who always knows more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a TV series launched last fall, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a fictional security officer selected by fate to “save” Russia from chaos. Although he is called Mikhail, the message is unmistakable: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals frequently result in buttressing this identical story instead of debunking it. An adaptation inspired by a bestselling satirical novel aims to subvert the Putin cult by framing him not as a cause but as a symptom, moving the narrative weight to the political machinery around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

In the film, Putin is presented as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to steady the nation because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and practically plead him to take the top job. His response is that he would rather govern from the shadows, desiring permanent power.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the cool, reluctant strategist guided by fate. Historically, none of this took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one ever begged Putin to accept the role. The position was in essence a selection process with many candidates. Central to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who planned to control the state in practice.

The grittier interpretation prompted Russian media and online audiences to draw visual parallels with Putin. Edited images swapping the actor's likeness with Putin’s surfaced on city centers, feeding the increasing trend to see him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an star popular with Russian audiences, the Kremlin are likely to seize the opportunity to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's omission of public dissent, the opposition, or key figures from its narrative, even though it includes the past decade, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.
