Antony Price, Famed for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
