French authorities to begin stopping small boats in English Channel following British demands
France has agreed to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, following months of pressure from the UK.
The change in policy comes after the Prime Minister wrote to the President asking him to back the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police will be allowed to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."
Now, a French maritime police spokesperson states officers will begin intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential technique to disable the engines of the boats.
The decision to take action at all is a significant advancement, following a short-lived shift towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official left government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a boat.
Currently French authorities will once more be permitted to stop boats before they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, although it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be seeking methods to adapt to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
