Ghostface Original Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a major gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment signals the iconic return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Returning to a character you played in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that kept me up at night," the actor admits.
An Unexpected Return for Fallen Favorites
Reports have confirmed that three different characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, despite dying in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their return remains a mystery. Audiences should get ready for the reappearance of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first time since a brief cameo is a dream come true, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor vividly recalls the exact moment he got the news from the series creator.
"I recall the phone call. I recall the small talk. I remember him posing the question. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he says. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the years since the original film premiered, which made Lillard feeling very nervous.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that appears every Halloween."
The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the final product. He admits to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the beloved series.
"The outcome is either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I have no idea if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the series. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Excitement Abound
While many dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others return remains. Perhaps they live rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, like a previous plot device. Alternatively, maybe they are somehow still living in a bizarre shared scenario. The chance of a self-referential story, inspired by earlier genre films, also exists.
Moviegoers will find out the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
