Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting
A minimum of 16 individuals perished and over 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.
Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the events leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
