Israelis commemorate second remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
Citizens have assembled around the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-led assault on October 7th, 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The incident saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered reliable by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.
He also pledged to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not create a risk to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed official remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was observed around the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' representatives gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the terms of the agreement.
A high-ranking delegate involved in the discussions indicated that an evening round of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative stated the day's discussions concluded without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the opening period of the arrangement.
He commented that the negotiations are "challenging and have yet to produce any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the two sides.
Critical Matters in Discussions
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Plans for assistance deliveries
- Post-war governance of the territory
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member survived the incident on the gathering, where many attendees were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until every captive are released no one will feel safe."
"When we see all home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can start to heal," she added.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their backing for the relatives of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be alive.
Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "We need do every compromise necessary for the captives to come back home. But we really want promises that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now consistently show that approximately the majority of Israeli citizens prefer the war to finish in exchange for the release of the hostages.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of the gathering, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.
From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the heavy Israeli attacks persisted.
In Gaza City, attacks were documented in the dawn of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"As the dusk arrives, the fear appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the air strikes. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, notably my little child who puts his face on me all night."
"Continuously we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Medical Emergency
The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had taken in the remains of several people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli bombing in the south part district.
Nasser hospital in the south region of the city reported another two fatalities had been delivered. An individual was died by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the south region, medical staff reported.
