According to a ex- high-ranking official from the Metropolitan police, police departments are increasingly pressured to disclose the ethnic backgrounds of suspects in response to a surge in far-right speculation on social media platforms.

Recent Incident: Train Stabbing in Cambridgeshire

Early Sunday, British Transport Police announced the arrest of two men after a multiple knife attacks aboard a train in Cambridgeshire. One suspect, a British citizen of black heritage aged 32, and another, a 35-year-old of Caribbean descent, were taken into custody. Later, the older suspect was freed with no further action, and police stated he had no connection in the incident.

Updated Protocols to Combat Misinformation

This past summer, new guidelines were rolled out to tackle the spread of misinformation on social media, which had escalated after the tragic murder of young students in Southport last summer.

Yet, campaigners have raised concerns that this move could unintentionally encourage an excessive focus on the ethnicity of those accused and spark further extremist narratives when information are withheld with the general population.

Insights from a Former Officer

A former chief superintendent, who worked in the UK's largest police force, labeled the need for police to disclose the ethnicity of individuals in cases involving ethnic minorities as an "unforeseen outcome".

“When the new guidance was issued, I warned that there was a danger that there will be an expectation for police to release information on every single occasion,” he stated.

He voiced sympathy for his ex-peers in the police, explaining that they are “in a no-win situation”. “Pressure mounts due to rampant far-right speculation on social media following significant events, focusing on suspect backgrounds.”

Political Reaction

A Conservative MP, whose district includes Huntingdon, described it “sad” but necessary for authorities to swiftly release the racial identities of those arrested.

“It’s not ideal, but I comprehend the reasons. They essentially have no choice at this point,” he commented, adding that social media are leveraged to push agendas, making it critical for police to provide facts to address speculation.

Extremist Manipulation of Events

Prior to the official disclosure, conservative figures had demanded a quicker action. For instance, the shadow home secretary urged for prompt sharing of suspect information, while the Reform UK leader posted on X that the public should be informed “as soon as possible”.

Additionally, far-right social media accounts attempted to exploit the incident. A profile named “British Patriot”—boosting thousands of followers—circulated an baseless allegation that a knife-wielding man had been shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

Persistent Doubts

Even after police clarified that the suspects were British nationals, some figures continued to suggest that details was being withheld. A former Reform UK co-leader stated it was “almost inconceivable” that the incident was not an act of terrorism, despite official statements to the opposite.

Origin of the Directives

The guidance were developed by the UK police leadership body in acknowledgment of “growing public anxiety” and to ensure police processes were “fit for purpose in an age of rapid information spread”.

The initiative came soon after a political party accused authorities of hiding the identities and immigration status of individuals accused in a separate case in a UK county.

Precedents

In May, when a car ploughed into crowds marking a football victory, local authorities disclosed that the suspect was white and British to dispels myths of a terrorist attack by an individual of Asian origin.
