Mount Mahameru Outburst in Indonesia Triggers Emergency Relocations
The nation's Semeru volcano, the tallest summit on Java island, has exploded, blanketing multiple communities with volcanic ash, leading to evacuations and leading authorities to raise the warning to the highest level.
The volcano in the province of East Java unleashed searing clouds of fiery ash and a mixture of rock, lava and gas that moved up to 7km down its slopes multiple times from midday to evening, while a thick column of hot clouds rose 1.2 miles into the sky, according to the nation's geological authority.
The eruptions that unfolded throughout the day forced officials to raise the mountain's warning status on two occasions, from the level three to the top level, the agency said. No casualties have been reported.
Over three hundred inhabitants in the three villages most endangered in the district of Lumajang region were relocated to government shelters, according to a spokesperson for the national emergency management body.
He stated that increased activity of the volcano on Wednesday afternoon prompted authorities to expand the hazard area to 5 miles from the summit. People were urged to keep away from an area along the Besuk Kobokan River, which is the route of the molten rock stream, as searing gas flowed down the volcano's sides.
Videos on online platforms displayed a thick plume of ash sweeping through a forested valley to a waterway beneath a bridge. Residents, some with faces smeared with volcanic dust and rain, fled to makeshift refuges or left for other safe areas.
Regional news outlets indicated that emergency teams were struggling to save about 178 people trapped on the 3,676-metre mountain at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. The group included 137 hikers, 15 porters, seven escorts and six travel representatives, according to an spokesperson with the protected area.
“They are currently safe at the Ranu Kumbolo station,” an official stated in a video statement. He noted the post was located 4.5km from the summit on the northern slope of the volcano, which is outside the trajectory of the hot cloud flow that was seen traveling to the south-southeast. Bad weather and rain required the team to remain overnight there, he added.
The volcano, also called Great Mountain, has erupted many occasions in the last two centuries. Still, as is the situation with numerous of the 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, thousands of people still to reside on its productive highlands.
Semeru’s previous significant explosion was in late 2021, when 51 individuals were lost their lives and several hundred others were burned and settlements were buried in layers of mud. The eruption led to the relocation of over ten thousand people from their houses.
The country, an archipelago of over 280 million inhabitants, sits along the Pacific seismic belt, a horseshoe-shaped series of tectonic boundaries, and is susceptible to seismic events and volcanism.
