Prison Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison

He contested the law and the law won.

A couple of months following receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” the nation's democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro now seems destined for incarceration.

Expected Incarceration

The found-guilty plotter – who has been subject to residential detention in his residence while a number of court processes and appeals play out – is widely expected to be jailed in the near future, amidst growing speculation that he will be sent to a well-known top-security prison.

Previous Comments on Convicts

Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the far-right ex- soldier showed minimal compassion for the country's inmates.

“For what reason must we offer those dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be fucked, period. That's my view.”

At another time, Bolsonaro declared: “Unless you desire to end up there, you simply need is not rape, kidnap or rob.”

Prison Facility Debate

However the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has horrified supporters, four of whom this week toured the complex in an apparent effort to dissuade the supreme court from sending him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was among that group, claimed he anticipated the 70-year-old politician to be jailed in the following week and a half and feared his assigned prison could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal issues – the outcome of a life-threatening assault during the last election race – implied it would be hazardous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is extremely serious. He will not be able to manage if they move him to Papuda … It would be awful,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about packed cells and the quality of prison meals.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas noted witnessing cells holding 40 inmates: “It's virtually one meter squared per prisoner.

“We talked to the inmates and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the terrible cuisine,” continued the senator.

Allies Voice Concerns

He is not the sole person voicing opinions prior to the one-time head of state's predicted detention.

Authoring in a leading newspaper, a different supporter, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” end to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” public service and alleged Brazil was about to see “the largest political injustice in its history”.

“This is an wrong that gnaws the hearts of millions people in Brazil,” the former minister said.

Divided General Reaction

That may be accurate due to the substantial support Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. But his expected jailing has also warmed the spirits of many other people who feel he deserves to be imprisoned for conspiring to prevent the incoming president from assuming office – and also scheming to have him murdered.

The lawmaker, a representative for the sitting administration's Workers’ party, commented: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in a hole. No one wants Bolsonaro to be put in solitary confinement. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to receive proper care – but proper handling while incarcerated. He can’t persist being his self-appointed guard for his lifetime.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years celebrating the tough treatment of inmates, had abruptly realized to their privileges. “Just now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently claimed that basic rights are not for criminals – decided to tour a prison to discover what situations are really like,” he said.

“He is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, demeaning conduct”.

Likely Incarceration Conditions

In spite of speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now contains about thousands of prisoners, his probable location looks to be a close penitentiary for officers and other “particular” inmates known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

His potential cell are much more comfortable than those in the main prison, although still a distant from the comfort Bolsonaro had while living in the spectacular leader's home, about 12 miles away.

According to sources, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate reside in in Papudinha measures about 24 sq metres – approximately the size of two parking spaces – and includes a 130 square foot restroom with a water facility and a 12 sq metre balcony. “He could be authorized to have a TV and even a cooler in his quarters as long as they were donated by his family,” information stated.

Partisan Responses

Senator Lucas denounced the talked-about idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “an act of retaliation” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his future in the {
