The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Alleges Parent Company Prevented Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
One of the co-founders behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch of an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that established the company with his partner, revealed that he will independently develop this new product as part of a personal collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Between Creators and Parent Company
This latest announcement deepens the continuing conflict among the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders have claimed how the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Sorbet as an Emblem for Support
Mr. Cohen stated through an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas regarding the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder declared in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for support for Palestinians due to its coloration, which match the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Previous Activism plus Current Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that originally created several years back for endorsing ex- political contender Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts plus Upcoming Intentions
The founder stated how he will create other frozen dessert varieties that address issues that the company was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development follows partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at the company recently, following many years with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how the company's autonomy was compromised following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can fulfill the social mission, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told media outlets.
