As any prominent honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
- Another creative title missed out that year
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles in the world and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
