• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
