Triple National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic suffered a "devastating" injury to his knee when the Nuggets lost by a score of 147-123 to the Miami Heat.

The star player was hurt in the latter stages of the opening half following an accidental contact with teammate Spencer Jones.

Jones stepped on the foot of the big man, and he instantly collapsed to the ground holding his knee.

The veteran player, that tops the NBA this season in boards and assists, posted a score of 21 points and eight assists in the game prior to suffering the injury.

The player will undergo an scan on Tuesday to evaluate the seriousness of the problem.

"Right away, Jokic knew he was hurt," stated Nuggets head coach David Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Any player who suffers an injury, that's gut-wrenching, most notably somebody as talented as he is. We will know more tomorrow."

"The team will adjust together. Clearly, right now, I'm focused about him personally and the frustration of experiencing a situation of that nature."
