Zohran Mamdani affirms he will make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.
But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core policy, was not quick to announce he would live there promptly following his triumph in November.
"The choice rested on keeping my family safe and the importance of dedicating my complete efforts on carrying out the affordability agenda voters voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district known for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live there, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Political Debate
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
However his critics, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing despite the fact that he is from a famous family.
A House Not Always Used
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which ended in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for public city functions, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his humble Astoria digs.
Featuring cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's original era.
The property, which is said to has several bedrooms, also has enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is under rent control, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the cost of housing exceeds the average income.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
